Releases

Major, minor and patch releases

Three types of releases (major, minor and patch) will become available during the life cycle phases of a BlueX series. Which type of release can be expected depends on the life cycle phase. Minor and patch releases are backward compatible and do not break existing functionality of the last release of the same series.

Major release (n.0.0)

The yearly release of a major version, i.e. 9.0.0, is the initial release of a series. It adds, updates and/or removes functionality, and can contain breaking changes. It always contains tooling and guidance to handle upgrading.

Minor release (0.n.0)

The occasional release of a minor version (no more than once per quarter), i.e. 9.1.0, adds incremental improvements upon existing functionality and/or corrects existing functionality (bugfixes).

Patch release (0.0.n)

The ad-hoc release of a patch version (depending on the frequency of security updates), i.e. 9.1.3, corrects existing functionality (bugfixes) and/or contains (urgent) vulnerability fixes and security patches.

Every release type is cumulative: it always contains everything from preceding releases. A minor version released after a patch version (within the same series) contains the fixes of that patch version. Only the last (minor) release of a series receives patch releases: if BlueX 9.0.0 is the last release, the next patch release for that series will be BlueX 9.0.1.
