Important Update for Windows Smart Card Authentication
SafeSign IC Minidriver 4.6.0.0 is now available.
This release resolves a compatibility issue affecting smart card authentication on Windows systems after a recent Microsoft Windows 11 update.
We strongly recommend that customers upgrade to this version to prevent authentication disruptions.
Background – Windows Update KB5077241
Recent Microsoft Windows 11 Knowledge Base (KB) updates introduced an incompatibility with SafeSign IC Minidriver versions 4.5.0.0 and earlier.
Specifically, Windows update KB5077241 may prevent smart card authentication from functioning correctly. KB5077241 is expected to become generally available via Windows Update on 10 March 2026.
Systems that have not installed this update are not affected.
Affected Symptoms
After installing Windows update KB5077241, users may experience authentication failures when using smart cards or USB tokens.
Examples include error messages such as:
“There was an error while validating your PIN.”
These issues affect smart card login and digital signing operations.
Recommended Solution
SafeSign IC Minidriver version 4.6.0.0 restores normal smart card authentication behavior and resolves the compatibility issue with Windows update KB5077241.
Upgrading to version 4.6.0.0 is the recommended permanent solution.
Temporary Workaround (If Upgrade Is Not Yet Possible)
Users who experience authentication issues may temporarily uninstall Windows update KB5077241.
However, upgrading to SafeSign IC Minidriver 4.6.0.0 remains the recommended approach.
Installation Instructions
For a clean upgrade, please follow the steps below:
- Download the SafeSign IC Minidriver 4.6.0.0 and unpack the files.
- Remove the smart card from the reader or disconnect the USB token.
- Uninstall any SafeSign IC Minidriver version 4.5.0.0 and older.
- Restart the computer.
- Install SafeSign IC Minidriver 4.6.0.0 using the provided installer.
